Patan Travel Guide

Patan is located in the Lalitpur district of Nepal and is one of Nepal’s largest cities. Patan has a population of just under one hundred and sixty three thousand and is just south west of the famous city of Kathmandu.

Patan is known for its rich history and wonderful architecture, as well as its bustle of trade in the trading centre of the city.

For anyone going to Nepal a visit to the wonderful city of Patan is a must, as it will make the perfect day trip.

History:

Patan has a rich history dating back to around the 3rd century BC. The knowledge of the region is unfortunately quite scarce so first recordings of Patan’s history are around the 5th century when the city was under the rule of the Kirat Dynasty.

Later on the area of Patan was ruled by the famous Malla dynasty, this dynasty ruled from around the twelfth century and much of the historical monuments and stories seen today in Patan lend themselves to the Malla dynasty.

Sights to visit:

Bhimsen Temple: The Bhimsen Temple is a temple worshiping the God of trade and business. This Temple is a wonderful place to visit and really does give off an air of prosperity.

Bishwakarma Temple: This is a small temple located down a side street that is built of brick with a façade covered in copper. This is a temple dedicated to craftsmen and carpenters.

Degutalle Temple: This is a huge five storey temple for the goddess Taleju who in the fourth century was the personal deity of the Malla kings. With its octagonal triple-roofed tower this temple is a must to visit.

Durbar Sq: The Durbar Sq is probably the most majestic place to visit in Patan with its numerous temples located there and also the ancient Royal Palace of Patan.

Golden Temple: The Golden Temple, also known as Hiranya Varna or Suwarna Mahavihara, is a Buddhist monastery founded back in the twelve century. This Temple gives a wonderful view into the history, culture and religion of the region.

King Yoganarendra Malla's Statue: This wonderful golden statue has adorned its column in Patan since 1700 and is not only an eye catching monument, it also carries a wonderful legend about the return of the king.

Restaurants and Shops:

Patan also hosts many wonderful shops of all varieties and size that are sure to quench the thirst of any shopaholic.

The restaurants on offer are the Bakery Café, Café de Patan, Café de temple, Dhokaima Café, La soon, Museum Café, Taleju Restaurant & Bar and the Old House Café. All of these wonderful restaurants will deliver a taste sensation that will leave you wanting more.

Entertainment:

There are two great bars that are a must to visit, these are Banana Cat Café and Moksh Bar.

The Banana Cat Café is a Japanese tea haven where you can try all types of Japanese teas from herbal to Ayurvedic with wonderful Japanese snacks.

Moksh Bar is a great place for live music with folk, rock and punk music, if an evening of great music and wonderful company is what you are after then Moksh Bar is the place to visit.
