Between the Firth of Tay and the Firth of Forth lays the old Pictish kingdom known today as Fife. Fife is found on the east cost of Scotland and is a beautiful haven of wildlife living in the wonderful rolling hills of extinct volcanic formation. Within this awe inspiring land sits a little known castle called Birkhill Castle that dates back well over two hundred years.
Birkhill Castle is found in the quiet and tranquil countryside of North East Fife by the estuary of the River Tay and is relatively unknown to many who have not ventured north into this area of Scotland. The castle was built back in 1780 as the luxurious family home of Viscount Dundee and is still used as a family home today.
The family who enjoy Birkhill Castle as their home today are the Earl and Countess of Dundee and their children, a very Scottish family by descent proven by the fact that their ancestors were banner carriers for none other than William Wallace. This history means that the Earl is the Hereditary Royal Standard Bearer for Scotland.
Today visitors are enticed into visiting the castle to sample its beauty and relish in its grandeur. When you first make your way up the driveway to the castle you are first greeted by the visually stunning and imposing architecture of this magnificent building. Once at the castle the history of Birkhill Castle comes alive as you wander around the two and a half acre, high walled gardens and the grand splenduer of the large, high ceiling rooms dressed in ornate furnishings.
For those lucky enough to visit the Fife area of Scotland and sample her beauty, remember there is a magnificent castle tucked away in Fifes north eastern corner that is inviting you to come and visit. The Earl and Countess of Dundee are always opening their doors to anyone who wishes to respectfully enjoy Birkhill Castle.
Many people leave Birkhill Castle with a romantic feeling of times when maidens and gentlemen once roamed the castle enjoying feasts and evenings of dancing, wine and song in a very civil and formal setting.
